Jérôme Castagnier is the owner of Domaine Castagnier and SARL Jérôme Castagnier (the négoce house). He is the fifth generation winemaker and has taken the domaine to the unprecedented heights it is at today. Originally, he never intended to make wine, but was a professional trumpeter in the army. After much deliberation, he returned from Paris in 2004 and is now at the helm of the domaine. His ambition is to bring out the terroir as much as possible in the wine. To do this, he focuses on the finesse of a Chambolle and the structure of a Gevrey, which then come together to create the perfect Morey-Saint-Denis.
In 2007, Jerome created a négociate estate that accounts for 25% of total production. Domaine Castagnier is 4 hectares and uses biodynamic techniques. Most of this (2 hectares) is planted in Grand Cru vineyards. The grapes are harvested by hand and then undergo rigorous selection. Jérôme uses whole bunch maceration depending on the vintage, but not as an end in itself. The wines are further raised between 14 to 16 months in oak barrels, with Jérôme making a strict selection on where the wood comes from and which wine it would best suit. His wines are velvety, complex with a beautiful expression of fruit; a contemporary and perfectionist
