Productinformation
Saint-Aubin 1er Cru "Sur Gamay", as the name suggests, is located above the village of Gamay. The terroir differs from the other terroirs in the Côte de Beaune and the wines are quite different from those of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet just to the east.
The Moingeon vineyard (0.95ha) is located on the south/southwest slopes of the Mont-Rachet hill, just west of the Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru vineyard. It immediately borders several other Saint-Aubin Premier Cru vineyards (including Murgers des Dents de Chien) and the forest at the top of the hill.
The vineyard is 370 metres above sea level on average which provides a relatively cool mesoclimate with large diurnal range. This, in turn, is tempered by the south-west orientation which allows the grapes to take full advantage of the bright afternoon sun. The soil consists of clay-limestone this siliceous, chalky soil does not retain water easily, and the vines are forced to work hard deeper into the ground for nutrition and hydration.
Moingeon produces about 3,300 bottles of this Cuvee. The Sur Gamay wines are delicate and aromatic, with floral and mineral intensity from the terroir and subtle wood notes. A perfect balance between fresh acidity and the roundness of St Aubin.
