2023 is the first vintage for this cuvée from Alvina Pernot!
Domaine Alvina Pernot. In 2018, Alvina established her own négoce, growing grapes from her grandfather's vineyards. After a rigorous selection of which plots best suited her own style, she began production. Alvina wants to make wines with a bit more tension and therefore seeks grapes from higher-altitude plots. Moreover, she prefers to pick earlier to preserve more freshness and tension. From the debut 2018 vintage, Alvina Pernot no longer used new oak. All wines matured on their lees in used barrels, mainly from François Frères, until they were transferred to be bottled.
Champ Gain is a premier cru vineyard in the north-eastern part of the Puligny-Montrachet appellation. This vineyard is 10.7ha in size and lies relatively high on the slope - up to 360m above sea level. Only La Garenne and Le Trezin are higher still.
The name is a reference to the fact that this piece of land was reclaimed from the forest and planted with vines. Not to be confused with ‘’Les Champs Gain 1er cru‘’ in Chassagne-Montrachet, though the origins of the name will be similar.
The terroir is not the easiest, the soil is thin and varies considerably. It has suffered from drought and, since drainage is good, this causes a lot of stress.
Champ Gain is known as a good premier cru and tends to produce fuller-bodied, more pronounced wines than the climates higher up. But it all comes down to the qualities of the winemaker. Timing of harvest listens extremely closely here, too early means unripe fruit, but too late also creates unpleasant aromas.
Alvina's wine delivers, as always. Think aromatic bouquet with citrus, stone fruit notes and a hint of tropical fruit, passion fruit and pineapple.
