Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard is currently managed by Caroline Lestimé, who also runs her négociant business alongside this estate. Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard manages 9 hectares of vineyards, mainly in the Chassagne-Montrachet region. Caroline produces wine in the same way as her father, although we can see changes recently. In particular, the vineyards are worked in a biodynamic way. The wines have a classic character and have no formatting. The definition of a great Burgundy producer.
Just across the border from Chassagne-Montrachet is the premier cru vineyard Clos de Tavannes, in the northern end of Santenay. The vineyard is 5.3ha in size and lies on the lower slopes of the Côte d'Or with the famous premier cru La Comme above it.
The soil here has more marl and clay than in the southern parts of Santenay, with a crumbled gravel layer on a limestone base. The south-eastern aspect exposes the vines to the morning sun, while shade in the afternoon helps balance the ripening process.
The vineyard takes its name from its former owners, the aristocratic Saulx de Tavannes family, whose title dates back to the Middle Ages.
Jean Noël Gagnard's plot is just 0.13ha just before the official border with Chassagne-Montrachet. Wines from Clos de Tavannes are among the classiest and highest-quality Santenays, sometimes even reminiscent of Cote de Nuits wines.
