Chateau de la Maltroye is located in Chassagne-Montrachet and has been run by the Cournut family since 1939. The estate stretches over about 16ha in Chassagne-Montrachet and 2ha in Santenay. Production consists of 65% white and 35% red wine an impressive 70% of total production is under the Premier Cru or Grand Cru designation! They own parts of the 3 best plots in Chassagne: La Romanee, Dent de Chien and Les Grandes Ruchottes. With a total of 12 different Chassagne-Motrachet 1er cru, Chateau de la Maltroye is the largest owner of Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru vineyards.
Since Jean-Pierre Cournut took over the business from his father in 1993, the estate has been revitalised and the wines are among the very best in the region. The wines are bottled in the Château's old 15th-century cellars.
As in all of Jean-Pierre's white wines, this wine has a slightly reductive touch. This is due to the use of natural yeasts and sur lie aging that brings out the character of each climat. On the nose the mineral character emerges but on the palate the fruit shows well, mixed with fennel and spices. With the familiar precise structure and balance we know from Maltroye.
