Productinformation
Chateau de la Maltroye is located in Chassagne-Montrachet and has been run by the Cournut family since 1939. The estate stretches over about 16ha in Chassagne-Montrachet and 2ha in Santenay. Production consists of 65% white and 35% red wine an impressive 70% of total production is under the Premier Cru or Grand Cru designation! They own parts of the 3 best plots in Chassagne: La Romanee, Dent de Chien and Les Grandes Ruchottes. With a total of 12 different Chassagne-Motrachet 1er cru, Chateau de la Maltroye is the largest owner of Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru vineyards.
Since Jean-Pierre Cournut took over the business from his father in 1993, the estate has been revitalised and the wines are among the very best in the region. The wines are bottled in the Château's old 15th-century cellars.
La Romanée is a premier cru vineyard(3.4ha) located high on the slopes just south of the village of Chassagne-Montrachet. Due to erosion and gravity, the limestone soil at this altitude is light and gravelly. So well-drained and nutrient-poor -ideal for grape growing. This is reflected in the wines that are concentrated and fleshy with mineral notes, generally medium-bodied, peach, almond and a bit of honeysuckle.
The wines may also be named La Grande Montagne, given its location so high on the hill, this is a more obvious appellation. The name La Romanée (gypsy) is common in the Côte d'Or and should not be confused with the Premier Cru vineyard La Romanée in Gevrey-Chambertin or the much more prestigious Grand Crus La Romanée, Romanée-Conti and Romanée-Saint-Vivant in Vosne-Romanée.
