In 2022, Alexandre Fefeu produced his first wine under his own name - The Alexandre Fefeu Petit Chablis - Fontaine de Chaule was a reality. This does not mean that Alexandre is completely new to the world of wine. For 10 years he has been doing all the work the vineyard of his grandparents. The vineyard is located on the border of Poilly sur Serein and Yrouerre, in the Yonne department.
The vineyard is 1 hectare, has a south-south-east orientation, which means the grapes benefit from extra sunlight. The vines are on average 30 years old and planted by his grandfather. The soil consists mainly of the Kimmeridgian limestone renowned in the region, with some clay lower down the hill. In 2022, the vines produced enough juice for a production of 6667 bottles.
Alexandre is a modern winemaker and works uncertified organically. Relying on nature, all grapes are hand-picked and chemical pesticides are out of the question. The wine matures for 9 months, partly on wood and partly on stainless steel.
The hard work is now paying off, it has already won a silver medal in the Concours des Vins de Chablis and we too were blazingly enthusiastic during our visit to the Grand Jours.
It is everything you look for in a Petit Chablis, obviously the freshness and minerality the region is known for with lovely green fruit, but also riper notes and a certain textured body through the subtle use of wood and that with mega value for money.
We look forward to seeing what the future holds for this new gem in the range.
