Clos de Vougeot is the largest and one of the most famous grand cru vineyards in the Côte de Nuits. The vineyard covers 51 hectares of land and is famous for its fragmentation; it is divided into 100 plots and has more than 80 owners. Again, the terroir is hugely varied with a range of different soils and aspects, largely depending on the slope.
The western part (the top) is considered the best part, is the highest(255m) its gently sloping with gentle eastern aspect and soil only 40cm deep. Which is pebbly on a limestone base. Further down, the soil gets deeper and with a higher clay content.
Nicole has a total of four vineyards on three plots in Clos de Vougeot. Two plots in the northwestern part, one in the extreme southwestern corner and one in the southeastern part on the road to Beaune. The ability to play vary these 3 parts make it an 'always delivering' wine. The combination of these grapes makes a very complete and complex Clos de Vougeot.
