With the 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Pierre Naigeon has proven its commitment to making outstanding Burgundy wines. They have built a reputation for traditional winemaking methods and sustainability practices, staying true to the terroir.
Charmes-Chambertin is one of the lesser-known grand cru sites in Gevrey-Chambertin. Only Pinot Noir grapes grow there, producing red wines with a softer flavour compared to those from other grand cru vineyards in the region.
This vineyard is located on the Côte d'Or, just below the famous Chambertin climate, and its slopes are the shallowest and lowest within the grand cru belt. It is close to the border with Morey-Saint-Denis. The vineyard is divided into several blocks with small roads or walls between them. The soil is stony and well-drained with a thin layer of gravelly calcareous topsoil on top of a deep, rocky base.
As you move to the higher part of the plot, the amount of clay decreases, leaving a more arid, looser limestone soil composition. This specific terroir contributes to the distinct qualities of the wines from Charmes-Chambertin.
