Domaine Paul Pernot is a classic winemaker of the old school. The estate was founded in 1959 and is located in the centre of Puligny-Montrachet. Paul Pernot once started with 10 hectares of vineyards and specialised in Puligny-Montrachet production, today it has grown into a true family business. Currently grandfather is retired and his two sons are in daily charge. The style of his wines are rich, round and classic.
The location of Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet at the foot of the slope means that the soil is slightly richer and deeper than on the plots above it. It still consists of the same limestone and marl as the more prestigious vineyards on the slopes above, but there is a greater proportion of clay. The soil is still so thin that the vines have to work hard to survive. They dig their roots deep into the limestone in search of hydration, a process believed to add minerality to the finished wines. As a result, the wines are slightly less focused and structured, and slightly heavier, but often with more power.
